How to Find a Good Job After Leaving the Armed Forces

Hire Local 17 Sep, 2017

It is not hard to find a good job after leaving the armed forces as many large companies are more than happy to hire ex-military personnel. Following are some tips to help make your transition as easy as possible.

Get Help

Take advantage of the assistance that the MoD and various charities have to offer. CTP resettlement training courses offer great support and can provide both transition advice and training opportunities. Remount offers free courses that can help you adjust to civilian life.

Create or Update Your CV

Make sure your CV is up to date and written in language a potential employer can easily understand. Don't hide your military service but do explain clearly how the skills you learned in the military will be valuable to the company you want to work for.

Plan Ahead

If you know you will leave military service by a certain date, plan ahead so your job search will be shorter than it would have been otherwise. Look over regular job boards as well as job boards that specialize in offering work to former military members. Get in touch with people you know who may be aware of unpublished job opportunities. Research to see if you need to take courses or obtain certification before applying for certain types of work.

Don't be discouraged if it takes some time to fully transition from military life to civilian life. Simply do all you can to improve your job prospects and continue to look for work in the field of your choice. Ex-military personnel have much to offer and in time you will find an employer who appreciates your experience, training and skills.
