Advice for Your First Day On the Job

Hire Local 16 Oct, 2017

It’s natural to be at least a little nervous on your first day at a new job. However, there are some things you can do to make it go as smoothly as possible and pave the way for success.

The Night Before

To ensure a smooth morning, do as much as you can the night before. Pick out your outfit, set out any items you will be bringing along to work, and double-check the driving route.

Get a Tour

You will probably be offered a tour of your floor or perhaps even the entire building on your first day at work. If you are not offered a tour, ask for one. Find out the lay of the land and all relevant departments and areas – including the break room and coffee/tea stations!

Be Friendly and Open

Smile, say hello and be friendly with your new co-workers, even those you won’t be working with. If you are invited out to lunch or to drinks after work, go along. Socialising is the best way to forge new relationships, adjust to your new workplace and feel at home there.

Set Boundaries

While you should strive to be social and friendly, your first day is also a time to set appropriate boundaries. If someone from the next office over is too chatty or staying at your desk longer than you should, politely end the conversation to focus on your job duties.

Lastly, stay grounded, centred and willing to go with the flow throughout the day. Breathe deeply and mindfully to stay present and reduce feelings of stress.

The first day on a job can help create the foundation for a long and thriving career. Use these tips to make a positive impression, calm your nerves and set a course for success.
